Sumaar Special Indy - 1955
Streamlined body concepts were all the rage at Indianapolis in 1955 with Sandy Belond, The Sumar Team, and the no-show Keck car. We see the insides of Chapman Root’s Sumar Special that Frank Kurtis had put together for him with a full envelope body. The car was powered by a 270” Offy. Driver Jimmy Daywalt didn’t feel comfortable in the car and first got rid of the canopy. Later he ditched the dzus-buttoned on outer bodywork and ran the car as you see it, without them. He had qualified the car with a speed of 139.416 mph that was good for a 17th place starting position. At the end of the 500-mile grind, Jimmy was flagged home in the ninth spot with an average speed of 124.401 mph. ©AHRF/Seely Family Collection
