Ask the Expert

On this page, we hosted a feature whereby hot rodders could ask a personal question of our Expert of the Month via e-mail. The Expert, most often a pioneer, would answer the question over the telephone to us, and we would then post an audio clip on this page (see below). Unfortunately, we have had to end the feature, primarily because most of the pioneers did not want to answer a question “off the cuff”, but wanted instead to think it through, write it out, and then read it. We felt we were asking too much of them. In addition, many questions we received were not about hot rod history or traditional builds, but more about a muscle car or street rod (or even a question better put to Click and Clack!). So we were forever writing e-mails to say, “sorry, we can’t ask them that one.”

At any rate, we now have a nice archive of questions, many answered by the pioneers themselves, and we hope you will find this fun and useful.

Thanks to all rodders who participated in Ask the Expert!

QUESTION

Hi, I'm looking for an interesting way to rod my 54 Ford with the original 239 cid Y-Block engine. Recently, while gazing at the crossover pipe, I got the idea of turbocharging the engine using the setup from a buick grand national. However, the feasibility of this option seems iffy since not too many people have published info on this particular mod. To turbo or not to turbo the Y-block for daily street use. That is the question. And, if so, how.

I am restoring a 1934 Chev Master Coupe. I want to retain the stock car look on the outside while updating the running gear to make the car a better safer driver. What rear end could I use to bolt up to the stock frame to allow me to have hydraulic brakes. My questions would also include what front end to use to accomplish the same goal. I am using a 235 chev six cylinder for power?

QUESTION

Dear Mr. Senter, I'm sending you this message on behalf of a friend of mine Dick Roads from Marion,Ohio. Dick spent some time racing with you while he was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego during the late 40's or early 50's. He had a black 34 Ford Roadster which spent some time in your shop and was drag raced at some of the local strips. I go to Indianapolis Motor Speedway every year with his son for 500 qualifying and heard you were there this past May and was hoping to catch up with you there. Dick speaks very highly of you and his time out there in California and has shared many wonderful stories with me. He has mentioned coming with us to the Speedway next May if he knew you were going to be there and I know alot of time has passed by but maybe the two of you can do a little catching up if I can get you two back together. Thanks for you time and I hope you have a Merry Christmas. Sincerely, Mark Schertzer

QUESTION

Maybe you guys could satisfy my curiosity about something. I notice that you have Robert Genat as an advisor. I had ( lost it...) a copy his excellent book about the dry lakes in So. California and in there he talks about the first drag racing event ever in 1938 and that Jim Nelson was there ( if I'm reading it right...) I would like to have more details about it. The origin of true drag racing seems to be extremely sketchy in most people's minds, and that should not be. Most people think that it began with "Pappy" Hart at Santa Ana. Ganet's book tells us that an SCTA club got together and had this event. They might not have called it "Drag Racing", but they set up a measured quarter mile, with a standing start and a flag man and raced for the finish line... so, what do you call that...eh...??? Maso

QUESTION

Hello, and thank you for reading my question. I currently own two nailhead powered cars, a 66 GS and a 64 Riviera, and I am getting ready to start an A sedan project with a 60 401. My question is pretty broad, but I was wondering about any does and donts with these engines as far as rebuilding and generally hot rodding one. I have had a hard time finding anyone who really has in depth knowledge of nailhead performance techniques. Any information about, induction, porting, cam selection, etc. would be greatly appriciated. Thank you again for your time and knowledge.
